Don't ask me what happened to one of comics' best talents, because all I know is John Byrne really stinks. He's coming up with some really great ideas, but his execution is all wrong. Remember the Genesis cross-over? Lucky you if you don't.
Our latest examination of the downfall of Byrne is his recent Wonder Woman storyline in which Hippolita, now acting as Wonder Woman, heads back into the past to become part of the JSA. Well, it sounds like a continuity correcting storyline and for all intense purposes it is, but Byrne told the story so poorly that I just wish I could ignore it.
Wonder Woman and the present-day Jay Garrick head back into the 1930's to sort out some big mess (don't as how they got back into the 30's 'cause it was really stupid). While they were there, the pair managed to foul up linear time and entangled themselves with a battle with the JSA. Soon, after resolving their differences, the JSA plus two go to battle with the Dark Angel, who now weilds the power of Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt. A bunch of guest shots later, everything is resolved and Jay goes home, but Hippolyta decides to stay with the JSA.
Meanwhile, Byrne decides to undo the past 10 years of the Demon Etrigan's history in comics.
Interesting ideas and concepts are brutalized by shamefully sub-par dialogue and very-poor inking (both by Byrne). Even worse, the lettering (also by Byrne) is noticably bad, in fact, the worst lettering job I've seen. Plus, Byrne insists on making his mark on everything he touches, this time rewriting Donna Troy's entire history. God I hate that guy.
