Sock Monkey #2

writer & artist - Tony Millionaire

Hey, remember those homemade stuffed animals from your youth? Those "sock monkeys"? They were and interesting little specimen, weren't they. Well, here's Tony Millionaire to bring a bit of your youth into the '90's with an animated and jovial sock monkey adventurer. (Can I say sock monkey any more times...yes, I can. SOCK MONKEY).

I bought Sock Monkey #2 for pure sentimental value (even though I never owned a sock monkey of my own), and I wasn't really sure of what I would get. I havn't read (nor couldn't find) Sock Monkey #1, so this was like cold turkey exposure. From what I can gather is Sock Monkey (dubbed Uncle Gabby) lives in a "Toy Story" like world where the toys sing and play while the people are away. In this issue, Gabby and the stuffed blackbird Mr. Crow find a "shrunken head from the wilds of Borneo", so they decide to return it to it's native land by stowing away on a sailing ship. There they meet a parrot and have an interesting encounter with a whale. Arriving on and island (believed to be Borneo) Crow and Gabby find out from the parrot their efforts were in vain ("there are no head-shrinkers in Borneo" it cries). But paying no heed to the bird, the pair make the irate shrunken head feel at home in the sand.

A thoroughly odd and puzzling little comic, Sock Monkey is a lighthearted adventure aided well by unique and captivating line work. The comic could benefit with a little more character definition, however, I'm sure as more Sock Monkey adventures roll out, things will be much clearer. People who enjoyed Millionaire's cartoons seen on Saturday Night Live might like to pick up a copy of Sock Monkey, as might Bone fans.
