An adaptation of his own screenplay, Pi: The Book of Ants is a very interesting and haunting short story by Darren Aronofsky. While I havn't actually seen the filmed Pi (yet), I must believe that scenes are often silent, with a lot of sound and mood music playing, because, in comic form the story seems to be over a soon as it begins.
The art, by Edward Ross Flynn, features great use of black and white contrasts, and technology and form, as well as the overall look, remind heavily of M.C. Escher's pen, ink, and wood work.
The story is a simple tale of a man's descent into madness. But the levels go much deeper, subtly exploring the issue of technology vs. nature, the desires of man, the corruption of knowledge, money and power, and simple symbolism.
A great companion piece to the movie, and an even better stand alone story. Highly recommended.
