JLA #16-17

writer - Grant Morrison artists - Howard Porter & John Dell, Arnie Jorgensen & David Meikis (w/ Mark Pennington)

Coming off of the highly successful and highly imaginative "Rock of Ages" storyline, Morrison brings us... Prometheus... the man who can single handedly take down the Justice League! Uhh, sure. One man.... Okay Grant, whatever.

This two issue story (actually begun in A New Year's Evil:Prometheus) deals with the evil man sneaking into the JLA watchtower during a press gathering (to introduce the JLA's new members) and systematically taking out each member with high-tech gadgetry and fists. Morrison, not as high up on the DC continuity scale as he probably cares to be, makes more glitches in these two issues than in the past 15 combined.
Morrison mistake 1 - I'm sure Batman or whoever set up the computer system wouldn't have set it up without some high tech security device. Morrison mistake 2 - J'onn's not vulnerable to fire! It's a psychological thing, dammit. 3 - How would Prometheus be able to test his toxen that destableized J'onn's morphoplasmic nervous system? 4 - Where the hell did the key to limbo come from, and how the hell could a two bit hood get his hands on it, never mind all that other technology? 5 - Batman's fighting style would never be contained on a disk, as he adapts his style to every villain he fights... even if Batman fought his own martial arts style, he's still smart enough to kick his own ass. 6 - the Flash should have been through the watchtower a dozen times already while Prometheus recapped what happened alone. And considering Wally's constantly moving at an accelerated rate, those bombs would have went off long ago. 7 - the Green Lantern's ring should be constantly protecting its user, thust weeding out any unnatural signals that would be affecting Kyle's brain. 8 - if Prometheus wanted to kill the Justice League, then why didn't he kill Wally or Batman or the Huntress or whomever when he had the chance? (Duh). 9 - Catwoman in fake "Cat"skin? Get real. 10 - Green Arrow wouldn't be able to shoot a projectile out of mid-air, never mind the Huntress.

The things he got right...Keeping Batman away from the cameras. His portrayal of Plastic Man. Ummm.... not much else. Overall, poorly scripted and poorly executed couple of issues. Morrison himself admits to a little burn out with all that's on his plate, so maybe it'll be good to have Mark Waid doing four months of JLA. The art... Porter's issue shows that his stuff is progressing but he's still not very good. Jorgensen draws one hell of a Steel and did some cool pin-up shots of Prometheus, but otherwise he looks just like Porter.

As for the new line-up... well, I like Plastic Man, Steel and Oracle, but Zauriel ain't no Hawkman, Huntress ain't no Green Arrow or Black Canary (or even Zatanna... there's already one Batman in the group), and Barda and Orion are hopefully only temperary. I want to see Green Arrow back and Black Lightning would make a big stylistic difference.
