Hypersonic 1-4

writers - Dan Abnett and Steve White artist - Gary Erskine

There a little bit of everything in Hypersonic - aerial dog fights, conspiracy, explosions, war, aliens, and love... everything that makes a good story. And Hypersonic is a good story. Meet Wesley, he's a war addicted pilot - one of the best. During seemingly routine combat mission, Wes catches a glimps of a streaking shadow, maybe a plane but much much more... a foo fighter maybe. Wes takes off after it but is shot down. When he comes to, he comes across a group of seemingly-alien humanoids, and he runs. Wes is eventually captured and taken away from his brother, Bill, who is then told Wes is dead. Wes comes to in a top secret hangar where alien planes are being built and their pilots surgically altered to be capable of flying them. After a while, Wes receives his plane, Geena, and after being wired in, he finds out that she's much more than a plane... she's alive. She speaks to him. Wes becomes addicted to Geena who's much more than a drug, she's his lover.

Wes is a loner in the hangar, finding it quite difficult to fit in with the other jockeys - specifically Meany - all of whom seem to share a political view that Wes just can't agree with. So Wes takes Geena and goes AWOL, heading back to his brothers place, only to encounter a Man in Black, who turns out to be an alien. The MiB coaxes Wes to go back and destroy Meany who is an alien traitor and plans on selling out his race to their enemies.

This mini-series is over 6 years old, which is funny because it wasn't until the X-Files four years ago that the conspiracy/aliens/MiB thing became so big. Hypersonic fits in well with the various genres it mixes together, crafty writing and an engrossing story at the level of the mythos-episodes of the X-Files. Erskine is one of the best tech-artists in the industry, check out his work here and on X-Wing Rogue Squadron and see what I mean. The guy can draw hardware better than anyone, and he manages to put so much hard-bitten reality into his characters faces, they're really brought to life. Erskine has been fortunate enough to have the majority of his work accentuated by a phenomenal colorist, this time by Dave Nestelle - the best example of all being the huge mothership on the second-last page of issue four.

Hypersonic is also part of a multi-media project, the comic one aspect, and the other located at the VR1 site. Check it out, it only gets better.
