From February 12-27, 2005, New York City's Central Park will be home to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's The Gates. 7500 gates will snake along 37 kilometres of walkways throughout the park, each arch standing nearly 5 metres tall and holding a saffron-coloured vinyl fabric as a curtain.
I went on the 13th, when it was slightly above freezing with a gentle breeze. Starting from the southeast corner, I travelled all the way down to the southwest corner, zigging and zagging through the many trails. Of the 200 photos I took, I've posted the best 33 Gates shots so far, leaving the rest for later when I can stand to sort through all the orange pictures.
There were a lot of people out, both tourists and locals. People were milling about and children were praising how cool everything looked. One thing the photos don't convey is the sound as the wind blew through The Gates, although it's fairly similar to an unzipped tent flap, or a unsecured tarp.
(Based on The Gates pictures I see on Flickr, I might try a return visit at night, or if the weather changes drastically.)
