This page summarizes the research that I did as part of my Master's degree
in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. I've included
publications that I've written as well as the raw data that I have collected.
Modeling Continuous Emotional Appraisals of Music Using System IdentificationThis is the title of my thesis (and conference proceedings). If you want a brief overview of my research, try to get a copy of the conference proceedings. The thesis describes virtually all of the details needed to reproduce my results. Currently, I am working on summarizing my thesis in a journal article (or two).ICMPC8 ProceedingsWritten April, 2004 - Brief summary of preliminary results of my researchKorhonen, M. D., Clausi, D. A., and Jernigan, M. E. Modeling Continuous Emotional Appraisals of Music Using System Identification. 8th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA, August 3-7, 2004. MASc ThesisDownload: PDF of Thesis Input/Output data Raw Individual Appraisal DataWritten August, 2004 - Comprehensive description of my research. The zip file labeled 'Input/Output Data' contains preprocessed data collected and used in my thesis. Reading the data requires Matlab and the System Identification Toolbox. The zip file labeled 'Raw Individual Appraisal Data' contains the raw emotional appraisal data that I collected from 35 volunteers. Reading this data requires Matlab. You are welcome to use this data but please reference my thesis (or upcoming journal articles) if you'd like to publish results using this data. Korhonen, M. D. Modeling Continuous Emotional Appraisals of Music Using System Identification. MASc Thesis, Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2004. If you have any questions about my thesis, or how to use the data, do not hesitate to contact me. MiscellaneousCurrently, I am working on two journal articles. More details to follow later. In the meantime, I have stumbled across some things of interest. Y. Feng, Y. Zhuang, and Y. Pan describe a method of quantifying the musical property of articulation using a feature called Average Silence Ratio (ASR). Perhaps the ASR could be measured over a short "window" of music so that it can be used as an input to the models described in my thesis. Also, Shunji Mitsuyoshi has patented a device to measure a person's emotional response. |
