Bean (1997)

A sadly disappointing movie

It's Mr. Bean, one story and 75 minutes long. I don't know what to say, it works, and yet it doesn't. I know I just contradicted myself, but let me clarify that statement.

Mr. Bean is a classic tele-vision skit character. He's goofy, he's funny looking, and he's always getting himself into trouble. It's like a formula for success. It would seem natural that the character would easily transcribe onto the silver screen... and he does, but to a limited degree.

In "Bean: the Ultimate Disaster Movie," Rowan Atkinson's lovably snide character is a museum worker who is dislike by the entire staff. Unable to fire him, he is sent to America as a representative of the museum to open the premier American showing of Whistler's Mother. He is misrepresented as a brilliant art critique, and is dubbed Dr. Bean. Taken in by the other central character of the movie (whose name I can't remember), the director of the museum. Instantly Bean causes friction between the director and his wife, his children, and the staff of the museum. And, of course you know something had to happen to Whistler's Mother.

Bean works as a comedy, but it's very formulated. It could have easily been another Farley-Spade or Lemmon-Matthau movie. It's funny, it's just not "Bean" funny. The comedic predicaments are foreseeable, and the movie gets very sentimental at times, if for nothing else, just to kill some time. The only saving grace is Atkinson's impeccable timing and charisma (or lack thereof) as the character.

I don't know if the movie would have been funnier if it was an hour-and-some of sketches (it probably would have, only for some reason movie-goers get upset if a film has no central plot). It's not bad, and I recommend seeing it if you're a fan, but go on cheap night.
