The Wedding Singer (1998)

Sandler Singing Showcase

Adam Sandler is the wedding singer - the best wedding singer actually - who has drempt of nothing since the 3rd grade other than getting married. Drew Barrymore is a wedding hall waitress who is getting married to her longtime sleazeball boyfriend. The singer and the waitress become fast friends and eventually fall for eachother, but due to a series of misunderstandings they are kept apart until the conclusion of the film. Yeah, another happy ending to another contrived comedy plot.

The film is hilarious during the first half, while we see the singer at his peak, saving a marriage about to be destroyed by the groom's drunken best man. We then watch the downfall of the singer after his bride doesn't show up to his own wedding, essentially destroying a wedding. But his friendship with the waitress, whose fiancee has no interest in the wedding, blooms as they plan and shop for the ceremonies. Of course they fall in love with each other, then the movie falls apart. As a typically trite half hour of misunderstanding and outright character stupidity, the last bit is not only unfunny but aggrivating because we've seen it all before. But I guess that's the point, the film is set in the 80's and it's also rehashing plots of teen-age date flicks from then. But it's not a parody, nor does it pretend to be one, which mabey if it had been it would have made the film that much better.

Sandler and Barrymore have good chemistry together, playing well of each other. Sandler has renders some classic tunes, as well as one or two of his own. His humour much more subtle and less vulgar in this one than in his others (and on his albums), of course he does do his trademark outburst at least twice. Other actors also get a chance to do the wedding singer thing including Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz. Worth the price if you go on cheap night.
