Sandra Bullock is back in the role that made her a star - the really annoying chick from Speed. In this second go around she is joined by Jason Patrick, who replaces Keanu Reeves as the love interest in her life. The villain, played by Willem DeFoe, is as eccentric as Dennis Hopper was in the original, with all the little quirks and neat little character touches.
The film's premise is standard action flick fare, disgruntled ex-employee uses high tech equipment to sabotage a Cruise liner. Unfortunately for him, there's a rather ballsy cop on the ship who's there to sabotage his every move (insert explosions periodically).
But the movie itself plays at a pace that it can't keep up with. The way the cameras move and the score plays, you have a feeling of excitement throughout the film, but what's actually going on on-screen isn't really that exciting. The action, hero, and villain are all rather cartoony, making the film seem a lot more Batman and Robin than Speed (Jason Patrick would make a good Batman, though). Of course there are some fresh sequences that make you say "cool", and the the general tone of the movie is lighthearted enough to make for good a mindless viewing, but there's not enough substance to it to make it a good film.
