Keys to Tulsa (1997)

There's nothing symbolic about it

Eric Stoltz stars in this film which plays like an episode of Dallas - rich families, disowned daughters, a gun or two, drugs, sex and a little blackmail. It's pretty tired and there's not much to explain. The interest of the film is the intrigue of the back story behind the blackmail and that's about it. The characters are fleshed out well, yet give us no chance to empathize with them. There's some humour with Mary Tyler Moore's character as Stoltz's mother, but not enough of it. It's just a slow, dull, and essentially boring film.

Most disappointing is Eric Stoltz, who's played the role of the drug taking rich boy who falls in love with a stripper at least a half-dozen times before. This film adds nothing to his character roster and doesn't even showcase any talent he might have. It seems as if even he knows that this is a dull film, and he acts as such, and the supporting cast feed off that.

For independent cinema - which is supposed to be innovative and creative - this is just another ho-hum, back of the rack, leave me alone, never watch again, lackluster addition.
