Jingle All the Way (1996)

Family comedy my ass

Here's a perfect example of a film that doesn't know what it wants to be - at times it is a family comedy, a ripping satire, a children's comedy, a children's adventure, and attempts to be an adult friendly film - it isn't any of them though for very long. Arnold's attempt to do the family film thing is pathetic and doesn't live up to his previous non-action efforts Kindergarten Cop, Twins, or even Junior.
Schwarzenegger this time around plays a parent who works to hard at everything but being a good father. Failing his son one final time, Arnold promises his son on December 23rd that he will make it up to him by getting him a TurboMan doll (which is suffering from Tickle-Me-Elmo syndrome). Of course, he spends all of Christmas Eve looking for the doll, while his neighbor, played by Phil Hartman hits up on his wife. Also during his efforts to find a doll, Arnie runs afoul of Sinbad - also a father looking for TurboMan - who attempt to thwart his every effort. Failing to find the doll, even after a half dozen supposedly-wacky scenarios, Arnie finds himself in the experimental TurboMan parade costume, and saves the day and blah blah blah... it's an all round trite, predictable happy ending.

With the exception of a few Power Ragers - rip-off scenes of the TurboMan movie, this movie has very little entertaining value to offer children or their parents. The acting is poor, the humour is bad (where it exists), and the adventure is anything but. I like Arnie, and I always want to wish him the best with all his films, but family comedy is definitely not his forté... back to the action flicks with you... please.
