Halloween II (1981)

Did you see Halloween? Well, Halloween II is pretty much the same thing only with a bit more background added to the characters. It's the same music score as the first (with a few more droneing synth notes added), the creepyness well intact, and it's the same night as the first. This sequel, in fact, picks up exactly where the first left off, even going so far as to recap the last few moments of Halloween's grim finale to remind us of what did happen.

So, in case you didn't know, Michael Meyers is shot six times by Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence, falls out the second story window and takes off into the night. Jaime Lee Curtis returns in her role as Karen, and is taken by ambulance to the hospital. A mob frenzy on this halloween night forms around the murder sight, full of angry people and plenty of reporters. Meanwhile Meyers is on a killing spree elsewhere while tracking down his primary target, Karen. At the same time, Dr. Loomis is going insane himself looking for Meyers, aided by the sheriff's department.

An sighting of Meyers at the local elementary school reveals more of the madman's psyche, and the hallucinating Karen reveals tidbits of her connection to the psycho killer as well. In the hospital, the usual stuff happens, killing, nudity, cats jumping out of things... etc. until Karen again confronts Michael. The Doctor figures out that Karen is Meyers' target and he goes into the hospital as well to help her. Meyers is once again seemingly destroyed, but there's still 5 more sequels to go so we know it's not over yet.

Written by the original's writer/director/composer John Carpenter (with Debra Hill), Halloween II basically sets in stone the typical horror film layout that is used repeatedly for another decade and a half. Still engaging, Halloween two's not as thrilling as it's predecessor (more or less because of director Rick Rosenthal) it's the more interesting of the two story wise (with what little story there is). Still, it's one of the better sequals in cinematic history.
