I can't recall the last time I watched a children's film and laughed so hard. George of the Jungle, based of the classic cartoon of the same name, plays out like a great adventure but never stops having fun. The storyline is a dead rip-off of Graystoke, the Legend of Tarzan, and is a great parody, in which a plane crashes in woods of South America, leaving only George alive to be raise by the apes. George becomes very strong and very dense, an is fine until he meets Ursila, saving her from a lion. They fall in love, but of course there's the jelous fiancee who tries and ruins the couple's happiness. There's also the ape poachers who try and capture George's talking ape friend. George and Ursila go back to San Fransisco to announce to Ursila's snobby parents that she loves George and is not marrying the other pompus nitwit. They return to the Jungle to save George's talking ape friend in the culmination of the movie. Of course George and Ursila get married in a half human half animal wedding, and the pair have a child.
The comedy is frequently juvanile, but the satire of Tarzan ever looming makes it funny to an adult audience. The humour has that Naked Gun-we-realize-we're-in-a-movie feel to it... silly, but unlike Naked Gun, it's innocent jokes instead of bawdy ones. Even when there's action and excitement, there's a light feeling to it and the threat of anything other than cartoon violence never appears. The computer effects, such as George's elephant (who thinks he's a dog) and the frequent crashing into a tree are really great and keep the cartoony feel of the tv show in this live action version. Brendan Frazier is great as George, one of those actors that can buff up or pork up on a whim, and his comedic talents with line delivery and physical humour never cease to amaze. Thomas Hayden Church (Lowell from Wings) is also an exceptional comedic actor, fitting quite well in his pompous, jealous, cowardly ex-boyfriend role. This is the one of the best family comedies and it's reccommended to everyone.
