Cosmos (1997)

6 directors make for an interesting film

When you decide to put together and omnibus film you first have to find six directors who are willing to work together to create one film, then you have to decide on how the stories from each director is going to link to eachother. The best thing to do, as done here, is to have a main character available for use by each. In this case it's Cosmos, a Greek cab driver who comes into contact with each little story.

To be honest, I have no idea who any of the directors are in this Frech-Canadian film, and I really couldn't separate the stories (never mind match them to the director). Shot around Montreal, it seems to be a world unto its own, a cosmos, almost oblivious to any existance outside of the city. The stories carry on throughout the film, unlike other compilation films which have one story then another. We are continuously running into some characters (like Cosmos), somtimes between, and sometimes during other stories.

Each of the stories have merit, although some seem to drag on and are less entertaining - or as obvious - as others. Here's the story rundown: a woman tries to alievieate the stress of awaiting AIDS test results by gay friend out for a spin around town; a very curious man may or may not be a rapist spreading terror around the city; a rather hyper-anxious filmmaker appears on a hyper-artsy-techno internet music/interview/hairsalon show; in happenstance, a man runs into his ex-girlfriend whose "new breasts" taunt him; a girl stood up on her birthday is escorted by an elderly gentleman on a night she won't forget; and finally Cosmos' cab is stolen by bank robbers, and he and his nihilist cabbie friends have a grand car ballet chasing after them.

All of the stories are filmed in black and white, some better than others, yet all of them fit into the little world created within the film. It's an interesting, and at times extremely entertaining film deserving a few close watches.
