This is my third attempt at a review for this film. My first consisted of a rather longwinded explanation about how terrible this film was. That accidentally got erased while writing the review for There's Something About Mary. So pissed off by this I decided to write a one line review ("Just take my word for it, you don't want to see it."). Well, that's kind of a cop-out review, so I tried to write a retread of my first review. That didn't work out since it had been about two weeks since I had written it. So here I am again. This time however I shall paraphrase myself totally out of context and just give you snippets of what I said.
I began talking about the trend of Asian directors coming to America and directing a really crappy first film (look at Woo's Hard Target... eww). I then went on to describe how unintelligable the opening conversation was between the lead actors (Marky Mark Whalberg, Bokeem Woodbine, Antonio Sabato Jr., and Labamba Diamond Phillips). The opening action sequence was rather unique, the director (can't remember his name) using some off beat color shifts, strange camera angles, and atmittedly cool shots. Yet this was the only scene showing any style, creativity or originality.
The main story centered around nice guy hit-man (Whalberg), helping fellow hit-men (Woodbine and Phillips) kidnap the daughter of some rich bastard. Unfortunately, this was a side job, and the girl turns out to be the god-daughter of their boss (Deep Space 9's Avery Brooks). He's admittedly pissed off, and sends a team of hit-men after Whalberg (whom all the blames been placed on). In the mean time nice-guy hit-man and his kidnapping victim are making nice... then the guns ring out. They progress into some of the most cartoony and downright stupid action sequences since the A-Team and Miami Vice. It was like watching Wile-E-Coyote and the Road Runner, only it wasn't meant to be that laughable (I don't think).
This film borders on the verge of self parody, but takes itself too seriously to be an actual satire of Asian Action Cinema. As I said, it ain't worth seeing, but go ahead if you'd like... I warned ya.
